Beauty doesn't require perfection...

Every piece at Stone Veil Studio begins with a stone; sometimes a polished cabochon chosen for an unusual marking, sometimes a rough pebble picked up on a walk. The wire is what transforms it: hand-formed copper and sterling silver, wrapped, coiled, and sculpted until an ordinary stone becomes something you reach out to touch.

That transformation is the heart of this studio. An unpolished, imperfectly shaped stone can become genuinely beautiful when the wire embraces it, and that idea speaks to something larger. We don't have to be polished and perfect to be beautiful.

From the chemical plant floor to the jeweler's bench...

Stone Veil Studio is the work of Tara Danks, the founder, artist, and recovering perfectionist.

Tara spent her career as a chemical engineer in manufacturing, a world of precision, process, and detail. The wire found her in 2010 - when as a production manager looking for a personal way to thank her team - she bought craft wire, beads, and a few tools, and designed her first wire-wrapped Christmas ornament. The ornaments became a yearly tradition. In the quiet hours between, she taught herself earrings, ear cuffs, and small wire pendants, one experiment at a time.

When she retired in 2025, the hobby became a calling. A wire-wrapping class in Boise, Idaho - where she wrapped her first stone in copper - turned a longtime craft into a new adventure: uniting stone and wire.

The engineer in her still strives for symmetry and exactness. The artist in her has learned to let go. Somewhere between the two is where each piece takes shape - precise enough to last, free enough to be one of a kind.

Found, hunted, and chosen by hand...

Tara is a rock hunter at heart. Many Stone Veil pieces begin with natural stones gathered on walks and hikes. These stones were chosen for an interesting shape, an unexpected texture, a vein of color. (One collection began with stones discovered at the bottom of a potted plant she was re-potting.)

Alongside these found stones, she hand-selects polished cabochons from small shops and independent suppliers, including a local bead shop and a glassblowing studio here in central Illinois.

Each was chosen for its color, shape, and the markings that make it unlike any other. She keeps no warehouse of inventory. Stones are found or chosen as each piece calls for them, which is why no two Stone Veil designs are ever quite the same.

Copper and silver, worked by hand...

Every piece is wrapped in copper or sterling silver wire from Rio Grande Jewelry Supply, a supplier with published commitments to ethically sourced metals and conservation.

Most pieces feature copper in its natural state, warm and unlacquered, occasionally antiqued for depth. Sterling silver is special-ordered for select designs.

No castings. No molds. Just wire, stone, and hands.
